My Mini Clientele

Going shopping with our kiddos in tow is about as much fun as taking them to the museum on a Saturday afternoon during school vacation week. Great in theory, but the minute you walk through the great doors that say welcome, you wish alcohol was being served in large, large glasses. Same goes for shopping. They give out drinks at jewelry stores for obvious reasons, I can’t imagine a more obvious reason than for parents that need it before enduring the mayhem that is clothes shopping. “Moooom, you’re soooo annoying! I’m not wearing that! That’s disgusting!”

That’s where I come in. When it comes to fashion, you’re never too young to look fabulous, and you’re certainly never too young to start shopping… especially with the help of your own personal stylist!

Recently I was called upon by a good friend of mine to help her find some fun pieces for her five year old daughter, Chloe. A few pieces for weekends, some for visiting grandma, and of course some ensembles for the holiday season.

I absolutely loved shopping for Miss Chloe! I have two little boys, so finally getting to step foot in the girl’s section made me insanely happy. I think I’m still giddy. I wanted to find separates so that Chloe could have fun mixing and matching herself and so that each piece could be worn either casually or dressy. Kid’s clothing is like a drug, you can’t get enough, everything is so darn cute, and makes you feel so darn happy.  You could really go overboard and spend more on them than you would ever spend on yourself (which happens all the time) so I wanted to mix higher end with everyday pieces to keep the budget in check.

I wanted to keep Chloe’s look cute and kiddish, yet sophisticated, trendy and chic and I wanted to integrate what’s hot in women’s trends into the collection I put together for Chloe. A little leather here, some biker boots and studs there, the sweatshirt over button-up shirt trend and the ever girly floral touch. I had a blast shopping for my FFF (fashion friends forever) and I know that Mama was especially happy because I saved her not only a bundle of time, but her sanity as well… that’s what stylists are for.

White With Envy

Here’s a rule your kiddos will be more than happy to break: No white after Labor Day. White is my favorite color, so the thought of completely whiting it out from my wardrobe for 8 months out of the year is not an option. I tell all of my clients to incorporate white into their fall and winter wardrobe in some way, whether a beautiful white jacket or even white jeans. The only rule to follow is making sure your whites are in a winter appropriate fabric, no linens allowed.

This year, winter whites are cooler than ever so why not incorporate this white-hot trend into your kiddo’s wardrobe as well! I’ve put together some gorgeous pieces that your little girl won’t be able to resist.

Shining Bright Like a Diamond

Last night, my hot date and I went to the grand opening of the Alexis Bittar boutique opening on Newbury Street in Boston. Not only was it the grand opening, but it was the grand debut of the master’s Fine Jewelry Collection. This new collection is demure and elegant in comparison to his bolder lucite pieces, but with an edge that is just so Alexis.

I’ve been obsessed with Alexis’ gorgeous creations since the beginning of time, (yes, before the dinosaurs) – I’ve always loved using his bold pieces in every one of my photoshoots. His signature lucite and crystal combo have made him a super star in the fashion world and I’m so excited about him bringing his world to ours with our very own boutique.

Key to the Cure with Fashion

Every year Saks Fifth Avenue partners with the Friends of Dana-Farber to present the annual nationwide “Key to the Cure” initiative to fight women’s cancers. For one weekend in October, Saks donates 2 percent of all clothing sales to the Susan F. Smith Center for Women’s Cancers and raises a ton of money from the entrance to the fashion show itself.

This year I was extremely honored to have been asked to help style and emcee this annual fashion show!

Last week I was invited to Saks in Boston to see what the Marketing Director, Cara Fratto had up her (designer) sleeve. Along with Marketing Manager Christina Giordano, we went through each look one by one and discussed how it could best be styled for every type of woman, from mom to corporate vixen to lady who lunches to lady who picks up kids at school to charity queen. We spent hours picking out the perfect hats, cross-body bags, jewels, sunglasses and of course, the ever-so important shoe, for every single ensemble. Tough job, but somebody had to do it.

La Vie en Rose

When my husband and I were thinking of names for our second son, we fell in love with the first name Maxim. A strong name that my husband actually picked out and one that paid homage to my Russian background. That was easy… Now it was onto the middle name. You would think that if 9 months was enough time to create a human being, then surely it would be enough to create a suitable middle name as well. Much harder.

After going back and forth and googling countless names and meanings, it was not until Maxi’s arrival that we were 100% settled on the name, Paris. Our first son Levi’s middle name is Lex, after Lexington Avenue in NYC… So for Maxi’s, we wanted a place name as well.

Before our two boys came along, Paris, the city, was our first love. We’d been there twice together and just couldn’t get enough. The beauty of the city, the sophistication of its people, the grandeur of its architecture, the importance of its history… and of course, the je ne sais quoi of its food – my weakness is anything Laduree and anything croque – cheesy, (pun intended), I know, but true.

It was only natural that Paris would be the perfect middle name for baby Maxi. Maxim Paris Goldberg. Parfait!

And to celebrate baby Maxi, I thought it was high time I put my photoshoot production skills to work and finally take on the task of the dreaded family photo.

I didn’t want any old photoshoot with our collars up, beach in the background, one kid staring blankly, the other with a tortured grimace, dad asking when this will all end and mom putting on a brave face long enough to get 4 good shots on camera to then take 4 good shots (of vodka) at the end of the day. I wanted a more romantic idea of the typical family shoot – a family shoot, life, looking through rose colored glasses… La vie en rose.

We set the scene at the beautiful Crane Estate in Ipswich, MA. A French inspired breakfast in an enchanting enclave of the estate. When it came to the wardrobe, I wanted something equally as beautiful and totally not in the realm of realistic. When I saw this Georges Chakra gown at the L’Elite Occasions boutique on Newbury Street, I knew I came to the right place. I am obsessed with this boutique! If you’re ever looking for a beautiful gown, or even just a cocktail dress, this place has the best selection and it’s so much more intimate than trying your luck at the bigger department stores.  And for the boys, I wanted something chic but manly, dressy but comfortable and something that fit the scene but wasn’t over the top… If it were up to them, they’d be frolicking about in t-shirts and shorts.

My fabulous and talented photographer Kristina did an amazing job at making us feel like it was totally normal to be sitting there in a $5,000 dress, all dolled up, with a gorgeous table spread being photographed… totally normal.. no big deal. She’s brilliant when it comes to making you feel comfortable in front of the camera and with choosing the most beautiful locations with the most magical light, and I don’t even have enough words to explain how perfect each and every photograph came out.

La Vie en Rose was the signature song of the famous French singer Edith Piaf written in 1945. Its literal translation is Life in Pink… Life Through Rose Colored Glasses. It’s one of my favorite songs, here’s one verse translated into English:

When he takes me in his arms
And speaks softly to me,
I see life in rosy hues.
He tells me words of love,
Words of every day,
And in them I become something.
He has entered my heart,
A part of happiness
Whereof I understand the reason.
It’s he for me and I for him, throughout life,
He has told me, he has sworn to me, for life.
And from the things that I sense,
Now I can feel within me
My heart that beats.

Maybe one day my family and I will be having brunch in a beautiful garden, with roses everywhere, dressed like royalty and having an amazing time together… but maybe we already are; it’s just  a matter of putting on our rose colored glasses to see the beauty in simple every day things.

Enjoy the show….

Just when I thought my love affair with JC Penney couldn’t get any stronger (don’t worry, my husband knows all about it), I recently discovered that it also carries a kids Ted Baker line, Baker by Ted Baker. This British brand has been around for years, and my husband and I shop their collections, but lo and behold, something for my kiddos too? Here are a few pieces that I’m coveting for fall, but just to let you know, the material and quality looks a whole lot better in person.  I would definitely go check it out!

Joe Joe Fresh…

I’ve been in love with the Joe Fresh brand for a few years now, a Canadian brand that has overtaken its southern fashionable neighbor. The only store I knew about was smack dab in the middle of 5th Avenue amongst the Cartiers and Van Cleefs, but this Gentle (on-the-wallet) Giant was always so welcoming. The styles, impeccable. The prices, unforgettable. It was love at first sight aaaand we’ve been lovers ever since… Until of course, I found out they buddied up with JC Penney to bring their pop up stores to the masses, and, sold kid’s clothing… Now I believe it’s a love affair to last a lifetime.

After scouring JC Penney for the cutest duds for my boys, I thought I’d share my faves… even something for the girlies.

Brand New Baby, Brand New Nursery

Upon the arrival of the newest addition to our family, I finally finished the newest addition to our home, Baby Maxim Paris’ nursery.

When coming up with a theme for the room, for some reason, I just couldn’t let go of the idea of doing some sort of canopy over the baby’s crib. And, since I was having another boy, the princess/fairy crib idea with drapes and canopies galore went right out the window with the fairies. I decided the only way to do a canopy for a boy was to create a circus tent… but I didn’t stop there… I thought a vintage circus would be much more challenging and give me more of an inspiration.

For this nursery, I wanted to try a more textured and busier look with wallpaper and build the room around that. I spent countless hours searching for the perfect wallpaper and came across a pattern and design that fit the theme to a T… T as in tiger… roarrrrr….

Tiger Wallpaper

Tiger Wallpaper

The tigers standing on each other’s heads reminded me of circus performing animals and from a distance, the spaces in between the tigers created a really unique geometric shape.

Because the wallpaper is so busy, I didn’t want to plaster every inch of the wall with it, and I wanted to bring in another “circus” element, so I decided to break up the wall space with a chair rail. Above the chair rail would be all wallpaper, and below, a matching vertical stripe. My original thought was to find a striped wallpaper, but after realizing I may just lose my eyesight searching online and through countless wallpaper books for the perfect stripe, I gave up, and decided that painting would suffice.

Picking the perfect paint color

Picking the perfect paint color

If you’re thinking of mixing and matching so many textures and colors, it’s important to keep the colors in each element as closely matched as possible… otherwise, you’re bringing in too many elements which the eye can’t blend together, and I think, creates a messy and incohesive look. I matched the light aqua color from the wallpaper for the stripes down below.

Let's start painting those stripes!

Let’s start painting those stripes!

Fabric shopping

Fabric shopping

I looked at so many fabrics with a bright red and white stripe, but I ended up choosing this more subdued red and beige stripe with a tiny light blue stripe going through it… could it be any more perfect?

And… Voila! La piece de resistance… the reason I chose this whole theme to begin with…

Voila!

Voila!

After I picked the fabric, it was time to have it matched to the space, and thanks to my amazing neighbor with the magic hands, he sewed my custom made canopy. I found the perfect tassels to hang on the ends, and don’t forget the gold-toned pom pom edging to complete the look.

Circus Posters

Circus Posters

Another detail I really wanted to incorporate were the vintage posters. I’ve always thought these nostalgic pictures were so amazing and luckily my husband found an entire coffee table book on vintage circuses in the bargain bin, so we just cut pictures out of there, bought these frames from Target and brought a little nostalgia into the space.

Nursery

Just because you’re designing a nursery doesn’t mean you have to think strictly nursery furniture. You are no less of a parent if you don’t invest in one of those made-for-nursery rockers… I say get creative and find any comfy chair that matches the decor… this way, when your kiddo outgrows the nursery, you can try and use the chair in another part of your house. And, I tend to never get too matchy matchy with furniture. This chair and foot rest are completely different styles, yet blend so well into the style of the room.

I’m all about the details… I found these two elephant hooks on Etsy.com

I found this on Etsy too… I asked the person to make the chevron pattern the same light aqua color and then sewed the edging on the pillow myself for a cuter finish.

A closer look at the combination of the wallpaper, the unique chair rail and the bold stripes.

After months and months of planning and then attempting to make this idea into reality, I am so happy with the finished product… Now if only baby Maxim could appreciate it just as much as I do 🙂

If you have any questions about the nursery, I would love to hear them!

Lanvin Does Minnie

After all these years, I knew there was a reason why I was head-over-heels in love with Alber Elbaz, head designer for Lanvin.

Lanvin's team styling Minnie

Lanvin’s team styling Minnie

For Disneyland Paris’ 20th anniversary bash next month, Minnie will strut her stuff in a fashion parade in the French label’s custom-made dress. According to trade sources, her boy Mickey Mouse wrote a letter to Alber Elbaz himself requesting he make something custom for his love… how utterly romantic… I wish my husband had that kind of pull.

It’s all about the power of the dream.  “I always start the collection with a story or a dream, after that I find the solutions, then I arrive at the technique, then I have to finish it off with the dream once again. I start and end with the dream,” says Elbaz in the video.

Check out the fashionista and the brilliant designer at work in this video….
