You Are My Sunshine…

My only sunshine, You make me happy, When skies are gray….

This year’s photoshoot was set at an unbelievable sunflower farm 45 minutes outside the city. When I saw it, I fell in love instantly as it evoked memories of my own childhood; planting my very own sunflower seeds and watching the stalk grow higher and higher, into the sky, until finally, in early fall, blooming into a beautiful beaming sun.

With sprawling fields where the kids could run forever, stalks so high they seemed to swallow us whole, and the sky so vast we became its favorite Lilliputians. It was the perfect back drop for two little munchkins to create a world all of their own, to hide amongst the flowers and never know, dear, how much we love them and will never take their sunshine away…sunflowerFINAL13sunflowerFINAL15sunflowerFINAL12sunflowerFINAL8sunflowerFINAL10sunflowerFINAL9sunflowerFINAL11sunflowerFINAL14sunflowerFINAL4sunflowerFINAL5sunflowerFINAL2sunflowerFINAL1

Animal Instincts

Two weeks ago I was lucky enough to attend an event hosted by Saks Fifth Avenue for their popular perfume line Kilian. Mr. Kilian Hennessy himself was in attendance along with an uber chic crowd that was there to smell themselves up with his enticing scents and also to raise money and support for the MSPCA. The MSPCA is an organization that protects animals from abuse, fosters community awareness of animal cruelty, provides healthcare for the sick and also offers pet adoption.

Among the guests were two women that are not only ridiculously glamorous and fun but also very outspoken about their involvement with the welfare of animals. Erica Corsano spends countless hours raising money to help the MSPCA and also chairs their annual Spring Gala. And Amber D’Amelio is an avid animal rights activist. I chatted with Amber for a bit about  her true passion for animals and the message she’s spreading. As a true fashionista (you should have seen her most-coveted Chanel No. 5 bottle clutch) it’s hard to imagine being so involved with a cause that deeply frowns upon fur and leather, two things that seem to be a staple in the fashion world.

This got me thinking about the love affair that not only we have with animal inspiration but our children as well. How can we create a generation of kids that can appreciate the beauty of animals but not abuse and take advantage of their integrity? I thought perhaps by taking the idea of what animals stand for, their fun colors and abstract prints and incorporating that idea into their dress, we can encourage a different type of appreciation in fashion. I’ve searched Safaris and zoos high and low and compiled a fun array of animal inspired duds that any kid would go bananas for….

My Mini Clientele

Going shopping with our kiddos in tow is about as much fun as taking them to the museum on a Saturday afternoon during school vacation week. Great in theory, but the minute you walk through the great doors that say welcome, you wish alcohol was being served in large, large glasses. Same goes for shopping. They give out drinks at jewelry stores for obvious reasons, I can’t imagine a more obvious reason than for parents that need it before enduring the mayhem that is clothes shopping. “Moooom, you’re soooo annoying! I’m not wearing that! That’s disgusting!”

That’s where I come in. When it comes to fashion, you’re never too young to look fabulous, and you’re certainly never too young to start shopping… especially with the help of your own personal stylist!

Recently I was called upon by a good friend of mine to help her find some fun pieces for her five year old daughter, Chloe. A few pieces for weekends, some for visiting grandma, and of course some ensembles for the holiday season.

I absolutely loved shopping for Miss Chloe! I have two little boys, so finally getting to step foot in the girl’s section made me insanely happy. I think I’m still giddy. I wanted to find separates so that Chloe could have fun mixing and matching herself and so that each piece could be worn either casually or dressy. Kid’s clothing is like a drug, you can’t get enough, everything is so darn cute, and makes you feel so darn happy.  You could really go overboard and spend more on them than you would ever spend on yourself (which happens all the time) so I wanted to mix higher end with everyday pieces to keep the budget in check.

I wanted to keep Chloe’s look cute and kiddish, yet sophisticated, trendy and chic and I wanted to integrate what’s hot in women’s trends into the collection I put together for Chloe. A little leather here, some biker boots and studs there, the sweatshirt over button-up shirt trend and the ever girly floral touch. I had a blast shopping for my FFF (fashion friends forever) and I know that Mama was especially happy because I saved her not only a bundle of time, but her sanity as well… that’s what stylists are for.

Joe Joe Fresh…

I’ve been in love with the Joe Fresh brand for a few years now, a Canadian brand that has overtaken its southern fashionable neighbor. The only store I knew about was smack dab in the middle of 5th Avenue amongst the Cartiers and Van Cleefs, but this Gentle (on-the-wallet) Giant was always so welcoming. The styles, impeccable. The prices, unforgettable. It was love at first sight aaaand we’ve been lovers ever since… Until of course, I found out they buddied up with JC Penney to bring their pop up stores to the masses, and, sold kid’s clothing… Now I believe it’s a love affair to last a lifetime.

After scouring JC Penney for the cutest duds for my boys, I thought I’d share my faves… even something for the girlies.

For the gals…

LL’s 2nd Birthday Party

There’s nothing I love more than planning parties… and when it came to LL’s 2nd birthday party, I knew just what he would love. After our trip to Disney World last month, he’s been ga-ga over Mickey, so what better way to celebrate than with the Mouse himself.

When thinking of the decor, I didn’t want to go too obvious with all things Mickey, so I chose a simple color theme… black, white and red… although the 5 foot inflatable Mickey Mouse I saw was a bit tempting.

The bash was held at a Gymboree, which I highly recommend to anyone who actually wants to enjoy their kiddo’s party instead of running around setting and cleaning up. Let the kiddos go nuts with the Gymboree teacher and you and your friends and family can stand back and take it all in.

The Mama and Paparazzi were out in full force…here are some shots from the big day…

It’s the Little Things…

If I didn’t realize it before, it’s hit me like a big bag of dirty diapers. I have become totally and utterly smitten with baby and kid’s style. No errand, no blog viewing, no web search has gone on without finding something I want to share with you guys… I post a lot of my findings on my Instagram, but I wanted to include them here too… Enjoy! And, if you ever find anything in your travels that you’d like to share, please post to my Instagram- Googoogabgab.

With the recent collaboration of Neiman Marcus and Target, these precious confections came down from heaven compliments of Marchesa. A bit pricey for Target, but quite affordable for a Marchesa design. Their colors are truly versatile, so your little princess could prance around in these all year round.  $80 & $100.

Heaven!

Can you even handle this dress? Such sophistication packed into such a little dress… I found this at Zara … Super affordable and a super must-have for the holiday season! $24.

At this year’s Chanel Pre-Fall 2013 Show, Karl Lagerfeld chose the Linlithgow Palace outside of Edinburgh as the ideal location for this kilt inspired collection as well as this little guy who strutted his kilt down a very prestigious runway. When Fashion Meets Children’s Literature

I came across this beginners Bible of fashion at Neiman Marcus and just had to buy it… I’m sure LL won’t be itching to color in Karl Lagerfeld’s face anytime soon, but at least it’ll give me something to do while he’s busy drawing… Check out this and some other fashion inspired children’s books! Summer reading list contenders perhaps?

Manolo Blahnik and the Tale of the Elves and the Shoemaker by Camilla Morton~

In this contemporary twist on the tale of the Elves and the Shoemaker, Manolo Blahnik’s delightful drawings evoke the past, envision the future, and, of course, evidence the indelible footprint he’s made on fashion history. His illustrations take us from the banana plantations of his childhood to his current reign at the top of high-fashion footwear design, while playfully hinting at all the adventures he’s had and friends he’s met along the way.

Different Like Coco by Elizabeth Matthews ~
This rags-to-riches story of Coco Chanel plays out in a wonderful picture book biography as full of style and spirit as its heroine.
Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel was always different. And she vowed to prove that being different was an advantage! Poor, skinny, and orphaned, Coco stubbornly believed that she was as good as the wealthier girls of Paris. Tapping into her creativity and her sewing skills, she began making clothes that suited her (and her pocketbook) — and soon a new generation of independent working women craved her sleek, comfortable, and practical designs. Now an icon of fashion and culture, Coco Chanel continues to inspire young readers, showing just how far a person can come with spunk, determination, and flair.
