When my husband and I were thinking of names for our second son, we fell in love with the first name Maxim. A strong name that my husband actually picked out and one that paid homage to my Russian background. That was easy… Now it was onto the middle name. You would think that if 9 months was enough time to create a human being, then surely it would be enough to create a suitable middle name as well. Much harder.
After going back and forth and googling countless names and meanings, it was not until Maxi’s arrival that we were 100% settled on the name, Paris. Our first son Levi’s middle name is Lex, after Lexington Avenue in NYC… So for Maxi’s, we wanted a place name as well.
Before our two boys came along, Paris, the city, was our first love. We’d been there twice together and just couldn’t get enough. The beauty of the city, the sophistication of its people, the grandeur of its architecture, the importance of its history… and of course, the je ne sais quoi of its food – my weakness is anything Laduree and anything croque – cheesy, (pun intended), I know, but true.
It was only natural that Paris would be the perfect middle name for baby Maxi. Maxim Paris Goldberg. Parfait!
And to celebrate baby Maxi, I thought it was high time I put my photoshoot production skills to work and finally take on the task of the dreaded family photo.
I didn’t want any old photoshoot with our collars up, beach in the background, one kid staring blankly, the other with a tortured grimace, dad asking when this will all end and mom putting on a brave face long enough to get 4 good shots on camera to then take 4 good shots (of vodka) at the end of the day. I wanted a more romantic idea of the typical family shoot – a family shoot, life, looking through rose colored glasses… La vie en rose.
We set the scene at the beautiful Crane Estate in Ipswich, MA. A French inspired breakfast in an enchanting enclave of the estate. When it came to the wardrobe, I wanted something equally as beautiful and totally not in the realm of realistic. When I saw this Georges Chakra gown at the L’Elite Occasions boutique on Newbury Street, I knew I came to the right place. I am obsessed with this boutique! If you’re ever looking for a beautiful gown, or even just a cocktail dress, this place has the best selection and it’s so much more intimate than trying your luck at the bigger department stores. And for the boys, I wanted something chic but manly, dressy but comfortable and something that fit the scene but wasn’t over the top… If it were up to them, they’d be frolicking about in t-shirts and shorts.
My fabulous and talented photographer Kristina did an amazing job at making us feel like it was totally normal to be sitting there in a $5,000 dress, all dolled up, with a gorgeous table spread being photographed… totally normal.. no big deal. She’s brilliant when it comes to making you feel comfortable in front of the camera and with choosing the most beautiful locations with the most magical light, and I don’t even have enough words to explain how perfect each and every photograph came out.
La Vie en Rose was the signature song of the famous French singer Edith Piaf written in 1945. Its literal translation is Life in Pink… Life Through Rose Colored Glasses. It’s one of my favorite songs, here’s one verse translated into English:
When he takes me in his arms
And speaks softly to me,
I see life in rosy hues.
He tells me words of love,
Words of every day,
And in them I become something.
He has entered my heart,
A part of happiness
Whereof I understand the reason.
It’s he for me and I for him, throughout life,
He has told me, he has sworn to me, for life.
And from the things that I sense,
Now I can feel within me
My heart that beats.
Maybe one day my family and I will be having brunch in a beautiful garden, with roses everywhere, dressed like royalty and having an amazing time together… but maybe we already are; it’s just a matter of putting on our rose colored glasses to see the beauty in simple every day things.
Enjoy the show….
My angel, Maxim Paris
